We have learned about three forms of the sentence: the simple sentence, the compound sentence, and the complex sentence. The sentence is perhaps the most important part of grammar; it’s the structure around which your writing is built.
Picture it like the frame made of lumber when you start building a house. If your house doesn’t have a solid structure, it won’t stand up. In the same way, your writing needs a good structure to communicate your ideas. Try to use a variety of sentence types to give interest and style to your writing.
Simple sentences only: If you write with all simple sentences, your writing will be choppy.
Example: Bob is my neighbor. Mary is his sister. They play games. They ride their bikes. Mary falls down. Bob helps her get up.
Compound sentences only: If you use only compound sentences, your writing will sound sing-songy.
Example: Bob is my neighbor, and Mary is his sister. They play games, and they ride their bikes. Mary falls down, and Bob helps her get up.
All three types of sentences: It is best to use a variety of sentence types to make your writing sound rich and flowing.
Example: Bob is my neighbor, and Mary is his sister. They play games and ride their bikes. When Mary falls down, Bob helps her get up.
Be sure that you are using all three types of sentences in your writing. Using a variety of sentence types is a simple thing to do, but it will give your writing a strong and interesting structure.
