We usually add -ed to the end of a verb to show past tense. If the verb is single syllable and ends in a single consonant, we often double the consonant before adding -ed. Here are some examples:
drop – dropped
rub – rubbed
stop – stopped
jog – jogged
I drop my books on the table each day. Last night I dropped a glass dish.
The trainer rubs my sore muscles. I rubbed my sore ankle.
We stop at each red light. Mom stopped at the store last night.
I jog every morning. We jogged around the track last week.
When a verb is single syllable and ends in a single consonant, we often double that last consonant before adding -ed.
