492. MLA Format – Font, Spacing, Margins, and Header

When writing in MLA format, you must first set up some regulations on your computer. The computer should be set to double-space with one-inch margins at the top, bottom, and both sides. Set the font to Times New Roman, size 12.

In the margin at the top of the page, you will need to insert a header. A header includes your last name and the page numbers. These things go into the space at the very top of the page, within that one-inch margin. When you are word-processing in Google, click on the insert tab and then choose insert header. Once your cursor is within the top margin – the header area – you can type your last name. Go back to insert and choose page numbers. Number one will appear in your header. With your cursor, push the name and number to the righthand corner. The computer will now automatically number the pages of your essay and duplicate your last name in the upper right corner of every page as you write.

Just a reminder: MLA format uses Times New Roman font size 12, double-spacing, and one-inch margins. MLA format also requires the paper to have a header with last name and page numbers at the upper right of each page.

Once you have these parameters in place, you can begin typing your essay. Tomorrow, we will discuss more rules for typing an essay in MLA format.
