252. Abstract Common Nouns

A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.
Persons, places, and things are concrete common nouns because they are things that can be seen.
A word that names an idea – an abstract concept – is called an abstract common noun.
Abstract common nouns are nouns that cannot be seen. Feelings, emotions, character traits, and ideas are all abstract nouns.

These abstract common nouns are feelings or emotions:
happiness
sadness
joy
fear
loneliness
anxiety
grief
frustration

These abstract common nouns are character traits:
bravery
integrity
dedication
honor
loyalty
intelligence
courage
friendliness

These abstract common nouns are ideas or concepts:
liberty
love
democracy
deceit
hope
luck
patience
peace

When you are a patient person, you show patience. When you are a brave person, you demonstrate bravery.
The adjective and noun forms are sometimes very similar. Be sure to practice so that you know which form of the word is a noun.

Abstract common nouns name emotions, character traits, ideas, and other concepts that exist in our world but cannot be seen.
