83. Contractions With Have and Had

Yesterday we talked about contractions made with pronouns and helping verbs will, am, and are.

Contractions can also be made with pronouns and the helping verbs have and has (present tense).

I have = I’ve
you have = you’ve
we have = we’ve
they have = they’ve
she has = she’s
he has = he’s

I have finished my homework. I’ve finished my homework.
You have got ink on your face. You’ve got ink on your face.
We have found the missing key. We’ve found the missing key.
They have moved the truck. They’ve moved the truck.
She has read that book. She’s read that book.
He has gone to school. He’s gone to school.

The helping verbs have and has can be joined with a personal pronoun to make a contraction. In a contraction, the missing letters are replaced with an apostrophe (‘).

  •  You try it. Use one of the has or have contractions to write a sentence. Now make the contraction into two words. Use those two words in another sentence. It’s easy to use contractions in your writing!
