187. Italicize Titles: Movies, Plays, Operas, Musical Works and Albums

Today we’ll talk about four other types of titles that must be italicized.

1- Movie titles are always italicized.

Michael J. Fox stars in the 1985 movie Back to the Future.
Ten years earlier, Richard Dreyfuss starred in Jaws.

2- Use italics for the titles of plays and musicals.

The movie The Sound of Music won ten Academy Awards in 1966.
Our high school drama department is performing The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.

3- Always italicize the titles of operas.

Verdi’s opera Rigoletto is based on a play by Victor Hugo.
The Magic Flute by Mozart is an opera in two acts.

4- Italicize the titles of major musical works.

Handel’s Messiah is often performed at Christmas.
Eroica, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, is a landmark musical work.

5- Music album titles should also be italicized.

The album cover of Abbey Road shows the four Beatles walking across a street.
One of Bruce Springsteen’s most famous albums is Born in the U.S.A.

Always be sure to italicize the titles of movies and musicals, the titles of stage plays and operas, the titles of major musical works, and the titles of record albums.
