921. Confusing Words – you’re and your

The word you’re has an apostrophe (‘) in it. The apostrophe makes the word a contraction.
You’re really means you are.
You’re going to school today.
You are going to school today.
A contraction is a word that is formed by shortening – or contracting – two words. The words you and are are shortened into you’re.

The word your is a pronoun that shows possession.
This car is your car.
We say that your is a possessive pronoun – it shows ownership.

Use the word you’re when you really mean you are. Use the word your when you are saying that an object belongs to the person you are talking to.
