866. Comma Rules – in a friendly letter

Use a comma after the greeting and after the closing in a friendly letter.

If you begin the letter by writing Dear Mom or Dear Grandma – you need a comma after the person you are writing to.
Dear Mom,
I arrived safely at camp.

When you end the letter, you sign off with a closing – Love or Best Wishes or Your loving daughter. You need to put a comma after the closing and before your signature.
Love, Mary
Yours truly, Jim
Your daughter, Haley
