799. Past Tense Verbs That Change Spelling

Some past tense verbs do not add –ed. Instead, they change their spelling completely. Look at these irregular past tense verbs:
run – ran
drink – drank
write – wrote
ride – rode
bring – brought
think – thought
Today I write letters to my friends. Yesterday I wrote a letter to my grandmother.
I drink milk every day. Last night I drank some hot chocolate.
I bring in the paper before breakfast. Last week I brought home a stray dog.

There are many irregular past tense verbs – too many to list here. You just need to be aware that not all past tense verbs have -ed at the end.

▶Now you try it. Write the correct past tense verb into the blank in the second sentence. I ride my bike to school. Last year I ____ a scooter. Did you figure it out? Good for you!
