781. Prepositional Phrases “for me” and “with me”

The word for is a preposition. The prepositional phrase for me acts as part of the object in a sentence. Subjects in a sentence do the action. Objects in a sentence receive the action. Look at this sentence:
Mom made dinner for me.

The word with is also a preposition. The prepositional phrase with me also is part of the object in a sentence. Objects in a sentence receive the action. Look at this sentence:
Mom ate dinner with me.

In each of these example sentences, the word me is an object and receives the action.

If we add a second person to the object me, that new person will also be an object. The action will happen to that person and me. Look at the examples:
Mom made dinner for Janet and me.
Mom ate dinner with Bob and me.

Always use the pronoun me when the word is part of the object of the sentence – even if you have someone doing the action with me.

▶It’s your turn. Which personal pronoun will you put into the blank in the second sentence? Dad read a book to me. Dad read a book to Susie and ___. Did you figure it out? Good for you!
