A compound sentence is made by joining two simple sentences together. The two sentences are joined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction. There are seven coordinating conjunctions that can be used to make a compound sentence: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. The first letter of each conjunction, in this order, makes the word FANBOYS.
Here are some compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions:
I am going home, for I am exhausted.
I will eat a snack, and you can read a book.
I have not washed the car, nor have I cleaned the windows.
It is cool today, but the sun is shining.
We can see a movie, or we can play miniature golf.
I have little money, yet I want for nothing.
It has stopped raining, so we should play tennis.
Use a comma and one of the FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions) to join two simple sentences into a compound sentence.
▶It’s your turn. Join these two simple sentences into a compound sentence: I am hungry. I don’t know what to eat. Did you use a comma and a conjunction to join the sentences? Good for you!
