We learned yesterday that a simple sentence can have a compound subject – two or more subjects doing the same action. Today we will talk about a simple subject with a compound verb.
In a simple sentence with a compound verb, the single subject does more than one action. Look at these examples:
Janet finished her homework and ate dinner.
John plays basketball and runs cross country.
Dad washed the car and mowed the lawn.
Notice that in each simple sentence above, there is only one subject doing the action, even though there are two actions.
A sentence with one subject doing more than one action is still a simple sentence.
▶Now you try it. Here are two sentences. Find the sentence that is a simple sentence with a compound verb. Jim is reading a book about dinosaurs. Jim opened the door and looked outside. Did you figure out that the second sentence has one subject doing two actions? Good for you!
