712. A Simple Sentence Needs a Subject and a Verb

Every sentence that is not a command uses both a subject and a verb.

A command sentence (an imperative) begins with a verb and has no written subject.
Be quiet!
Stop talking.
Sit down.
These are commands that have no written subject. All other sentences need both a subject and a verb.

Here are simple sentences with both a subject and a verb.
John washed the car.
Susan ate dinner.
Mom baked a cake.
Bill rode his bike.
Notice how each sentence begins with a subject (a noun) and that subject does an action (the verb).

A simple sentence needs both a subject and a verb.
