621. Comma Rules – Greeting and Closing in a Letter

We use a comma to set off certain words. When writing a letter, we begin by greeting the person to whom we are writing. Always put a comma after the words of the greeting. A greeting looks like this:
Dear Mom,
Dear Grandma,
Dear Sue,

When we end a letter, we sign off by writing our own name. The word or words we write before signing our name is called the closing. Always put a comma after the closing. A closing looks like this:
Love, Susan
Yours truly, Mary
Best regards, Bob

Use a comma after a greeting or a closing when writing a letter.

▶It’s your turn. Insert two commas into this short letter: Dear John We will meet at 2:00. Sincerely Jim
