618. Indefinite Pronouns – Anyone, Everyone, No one, Someone

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence. An indefinite pronoun takes the place of a noun – but it is unclear which noun is being replaced by the pronoun. For that reason, it’s called an indefinite pronoun.

The words anyone, everyone, no one, and someone are all indefinite pronouns. Watch how they replace a noun in each of these sentences. We don’t really know which noun was there before we used the pronoun.
Did anyone call while I was gone?
I hope everyone had enough to eat.
Bob says no one sent in a registration form.
Maybe someone will register tomorrow.

Use the indefinite pronouns anyone, everyone, no one, and someone to take the place of a noun in a sentence when you don’t know exactly which person is being referenced.

▶It’s your turn. Choose one of these indefinite pronouns for the blank in this sentence. I was hoping that someone would stop over and visit with me, but ____ came. Did you figure it out? Good for you!
