586. Adverbs Modify Verbs

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb.

The adverb might tell how something was done.
Tom walked slowly down the lane.
The little girl played happily in the sand.

The adverb might tell when something was done.
Sarah bought a new dress yesterday.
The theater group performs tonight.

An adverb also tells how much or to what degree something was done.
John worked extremely hard on his English essay.
The squirrel climbed very quickly up the tree.

Use an adverb to tell more about how the action happened, when the action happened, and to what degree the action happened.
