The word tense means time. A verb in present tense means an action in present time. A present tense verb shows action happening right now.
The action verb throw is a present tense verb and can be used with different subjects to make a sentence. Look at these examples:
I throw the ball to you.
You throw the ball to me.
We throw the ball back and forth.
They throw the ball to each other.
Now look what happens when we use the action verb throw with the subjects Mary and Bob.
Bob throws the ball.
Mary throws the ball.
He throws the ball.
She throws the ball.
When the subject is a boy’s name or a girl’s name or the pronouns he and she, you must add an -s onto the action verb. Throw becomes throws.
This happens with all present tense action verbs.
I hit the ball. John hits the ball.
We eat supper. Julie eats supper.
They jump rope at recess. Sarah jumps rope at recess.
A present tense verb shows action at the present time. Always add and -s to the end of a present tense action verb when a male or a female subject, or he or she, is doing the action.
▶Now you try it. Insert a present tense action verb into this sentence blank: I _____ a book each week, but John ______ three books each week. Did you figure out which verb to put into the blanks? Did you add an -s to the verb for the second blank? Good for you!
