474. Change an Indirect Object to an Object of the Preposition

We talked yesterday about an indirect object. An indirect object sits between the verb and the direct object.
Bob read Mary a story.
Bob is the subject, and the action is read. The action is transferred to the direct object story. Mary is the indirect object sitting between the verb and the direct object.

We can change the sentence – take away the indirect object and add a prepositional phrase.
Bob read a story to Mary.
Mary is no longer an indirect object. Mary is now the object of the preposition.

Here are more sentences with an indirect object. Watch how we change the indirect object to an object in a prepositional phrase.
John gave Sally a book. John gave a book to Sally.
Dad gave me his old car. Dad gave his old car to me.
Mrs. Smith showed the class a movie. Mrs. Smith showed a movie to the class.

An indirect object can easily be changed to an object in a prepositional phrase.

▶It’s your turn. Find the indirect object in this sentence. Change the sentence so that it has a prepositional phrase. Mom read me a story. Did you take out the indirect object and add a prepositional phrase to the end? Good for you.
