112. Red and Read

Red and read are two more words that cause confusion in English.

Read is a present tense verb when it rhymes with feed.
I will read the book.
Can you read the recipe to me?

Read is a past tense verb when it rhymes with fed.
I read that book last summer.
Bob read the letter as soon as he got it.

The present tense and the past tense form of the verb read look exactly the same. To pronounce the word correctly, you must know whether the action is happening now or before now.

Read can also work as a noun.
Note that these sentences have a, an, or the in front of the word read, so we know the word is acting as a noun.
That new book was an excellent read.
I can’t seem to get a clear read on that confusing situation.

Red is a color word. Red works as an adjective to modify a noun. Red rhymes with fed.
Susie wore her red dress.
Pick the red apples because they are ripe.

Read can be a verb (present tense rhymes with feed; past tense rhymes with fed), or read can be a noun.
Red is always a color word that works as an adjective.

  • Now you try it. Use read as a verb – either past tense or present tense. Did you change the way you pronounce the word to reflect the tense that you chose? Good for you. Now make a sentence using read as a noun. Then make a sentence using red as a color word to modify a noun. That should help you understand these confusing words.
