951. A Noun Acts as a Subject

A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. Sometimes a noun works as the subject of a sentence. The subject of a sentence is the person, play or thing who is doing something.

Look at these sentences. Notice that the noun at the beginning of the sentence is a person, a place, or a thing that is doing something in the sentence.
Bob rode his bike to school.
The dog is barking.
California is a beautiful state.
The water balloon exploded when it hit me.

Use a noun as the subject of a sentence. The subject is the noun that does something in the sentence.

It’s your turn. Find the noun in this sentence that is acting as the subject – the noun that is doing something in the sentence. Dad cooked hamburgers on the grill. Did you find the subject? Can you tell that it is a person, a place, or a thing? Good for you!
