902. Using Quotation Marks in a Sentence

When using quotation marks at the end of a sentence, you must put the end punctuation inside of the quotation marks. Here is an example:
Jan said, “Meet me at the park.”
Notice that the period at the end of the sentence is placed inside the quotation marks. The quotation marks come after the end punctuation.

Here are more examples:
The man shouted, “Look out!”
“Did you close the gate?” asked Mom.

If the speech tag comes at the end of the sentence, place a comma after the words that were spoken. The comma goes inside the quotation marks.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Susan said.
“Please be careful,” said Bill.

End punctuation in a spoken sentence must go inside the quotation marks.

It’s your turn. Where would you place the beginning and ending quotation marks in this sentence? Jill said, Let’s go to a movie. Did you place quote marks in front of Let’s and after the period? Good for you!
