821. Adverbs Modify Verbs

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb by telling more about the verb. Many adverbs end in –ly.
Jim drove slowly through the busy intersection. How did he drive? He drove slowly.
Sara woke early this morning. When did she wake? She woke early.
Janet carefully cut the cake. How did Janet cut? She cut carefully.

When using an adverb, place the adverb as close as possible to the verb.
Weak writing: John drove down the road slowly. The adverb is far from the verb.
Strong writing: John drove slowly down the road. The adverb is right next to the verb.

An adverb tells more about the verb. Place the adverb as close as possible to the verb in a sentence.
