Some action verbs are transitive. A transitive verb transfers action to an object. Usually a transitive verb transfers action to a direct object. A direct object receives action from the transitive verb. Look at these sentence with a transitive verb and a direct object:
John threw the ball. The throwing action transfers to the ball
My dog chased a squirrel. The chasing action transfers to the squirrel.
The delivery man rang our doorbell. The ringing action transfers to the doorbell.
A transitive action verb transfers the action to a direct object. A direct object receives the action from a transitive action verb.
