776. What is a Preposition?

A preposition is a word that tells more about a noun or about the action in a sentence. In most cases, a preposition shows position. A preposition is always part of a prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends with an object of the preposition.

Here is a sentence with the prepositional phrase in bold letters:
The cat is hiding under the stairs.
The phrase under the stairs tells the position of the cat. The word under is the preposition. The word stairs is the object of the preposition.

Here is another sentence using a prepositional phrase:
Jan drove her car to school.
The prepositional phrase to school tells where Jan drove her car. The phrase begins with the preposition to and ends with the object of the preposition school.
