703. Use a Noun as an Object – Indirect Object

An indirect object is always a noun. An indirect object receives action indirectly. Sentences that already have a direct object can sometimes also have an indirect object.

Direct object sentence: Mom baked a cake. The direct object is cake.
Same sentence with an indirect object added: Mom baked Sam a cake. Sam indirectly receives the action.

Direct object sentence: John threw the ball. The direct object is ball.
Same sentence with an indirect object added: John threw Sarah the ball. Sarah indirectly receives the action.
