A colon is used in math to show a ratio. A ratio is a comparison of the value of two numbers.
Here is an example of a ratio: Our team has a two to one chance of winning. Our team has a 2:1 chance.

Use a colon between two numbers when showing a ratio in math.

▶Now you try it. Change this sentence by rewriting the ratio as two numbers with a colon in between: In our house, the ratio of pets to family members is two to one. Did you use a colon to write 2:1? Good for you!
