641. Stop Punctuation

Stop punctuation is also called end punctuation. We use stop punctuation at the end of a sentence to show that we have finished our thought. Stop punctuation brings a sentence to a conclusion.

There are three types of stop punctuation.

– a period (.)
We use a period at the end of a statement of fact.

– a question mark (?)
We use a question mark at the end of a question that requires an answer.

– an exclamation mark (!)
We use an exclamation mark at at the end of an exclamatory statement showing excitement.

Note that a comma is not stop punctuation. Never use a comma to end a sentence.

When bringing a sentence to a close, use one of these three forms of stop punctuation: a period, a question mark, or and exclamation mark.
