When two words are shortened into one word, the new word is called a contraction.
A contraction is often made by combining a pronoun with a verb.
he is = he’s
she is = she’s
I am = I’m
you are = you’re
we are = we’re
they are = they’re
You can substitute the contraction for the two words that make the contraction, like this:
We are studying grammar. We’re studying grammar.
I am the valedictorian for my class. I’m the valedictorian for my class.
He is playing volleyball. He’s playing volleyball.
We can combine a pronoun with the verbs is and are to make a contraction.
▶Now you try it. Change two words in this sentence into a contraction. You are a good student. Did you combine a pronoun and a verb to make a contraction? Good for you!
