5. Practice Simple and Compound Sentences

A simple sentence is one complete thought. A compound sentence is two simple sentences joined together with a comma, FANBOYS or a semicolon.

Section A – Read each sentence. Is the sentence simple or compound? Write S for simple. Write C for compound.

  1. I lost my book, and I will have to pay a fine.
  2. Mom is taking me to the library right after school.
  3. It’s sunny today; I will put on sunscreen.
  4. I should do my homework now, or I won’t be ready for tomorrow.
  5. This writing assignment was easy.

Section B – Read each sentence. Decide if the sentence is simple and compound and write S or C. If the sentence is compound, insert a comma or a semicolon in the correct place.

  1. Mom went to the grocery store Dad is doing laundry.
  2. I should help Dad fold the clean clothes.
  3. I hope we have tacos for dinner they’re my favorite.
  4. I like lots of cheese and my brother eats lots of tomatoes.
  5. The dinner table is always noisy and happy.
