588. Use -ly to Make an Adjective into an Adverb

We use an adjective to modify a noun – to tell more about the noun. We use an adverb to modify a verb – to tell more about the verb. We can sometimes make an adjective into an adverb by adding an -ly ending.

slow – slowly I see a slow car. The car is driving slowly.
quiet – quietly Bob is a quiet boy. He plays quietly.
loud – loudly That is a loud crowd. The crowd shouts loudly.
rude – rudely He is a rude man. He acts rudely.
soft – softly The snow is soft. The snow falls softly to the ground.
bright – brightly Look at the bright sun. The sun shines brightly.
sad – sadly Martha is sad. Martha walks sadly through the garden.
