585. Practice With Writing

Section A: Decide if each sentence is active voice or passive voice.
1. The baseball was hit by Don.
2. Mary rode her bicycle to school.
3. John mowed the lawn last night.
4. The groceries were bought by Mom.
5. The team was coached by Mr. Smith.

Section B: Use the first two simple sentences to make a compound sentence (connect them with one of the FANBOYS). Use the second two simple sentences to make a complex sentence. (remember to add a subordinate clause word to one of the simple sentences. )
6. It is raining today. It will be sunny tomorrow.
7. I eat breakfast. I go to school.

Section C: Decide whether or not each sentence has used pronouns correctly.
8. John showed me his new boat.
9. She dropped her wallet.
10. Bill helped Mike fix his bike.
11. Sarah and her brother bought their parents a gift.
12. They found their lost dog.

Answers: 1- passive; 2- active; 3-active; 4-passive; 5-passive; 6- It is raining today, but it will be sunny tomorrow. 7- I eat breakfast before I go to school. Before I go to school, I eat breakfast. 8-correct; 9-incorrect; 10-incorrect; 11- correct; 12- incorrect.
