A verb usually adds -ed to become past tense, but some verbs change completely in past tense.
Look at these examples of past tense verbs that are different from their present tense form:
go – went
Today I go to school. Yesterday I went to school.
bring – brought
Today I bring my lunch to school. Yesterday I brought my lunch to school.
teach – taught
Today I teach swimming at the YMCA. Last year I taught swimming at the YMCA.
fight – fought
Today I fight the rush hour traffic. Last night I fought the rush hour traffic.
take – took
Today I take the bus to school. Yesterday I took the bus to school.
catch – caught
I catch fly balls when I play center field. Last year I caught fly balls in center field.
think – thought
Every day I think of you. Last night I thought of you.
Some verbs are irregular in their past tense form. We have to practice and remember verbs that change their form for the past tense.
▶It’s your turn. Rewrite this sentence to change the present tense verb to its past tense form. Today I go to Grandma’s house. Yesterday I ____ to Tom’s house. That wasn’t too hard, was it?
