50. Practice with Subject/Predicate and Transitive Verbs

Section A. Separate each of these sentences into a subject and a predicate by drawing a line / after the subject.
Example: Mom / baked a cake.
1. A brown dog ran down the street.
2. The sun was shining yesterday.
3. I helped Dad weed the garden.
4. Sam and Joe played video games all afternoon.
5. The circus is coming to town.

Section B. Look at the verb in bold type. Label the verb A for action verb and E for existence verb.
6. The squirrel ran up the tree.
7. He is a fat, gray squirrel.
8. There was lots of rain last night.
9. I saw lightning in the sky.
10. Mom closed the window shades.

Section C. In each sentence, write the verb. Then find the direct object. One sentence does not have a direct object. Write No DO for that one.
11. John opened the door.
12. Sally sang a song.
13. The timer rang.
14. Our teacher built a bookshelf.
15. Tim shut the door.

Section D. Find the indirect object in each sentence.
16. I sent Grandma a letter.
17. John threw me the ball.
18. Dad gave Mom some flowers.
