487. Common Mistakes – Plural Nouns Ending in -y

Nouns that end in the letter -y have special rules for making the word plural.

Two syllable nouns ending in -y must change the -y to -ie before adding -s.
city – cities
puppy – puppies
baby – babies
fairy – fairies
library – libraries

However, two syllable nouns ending in -ay or –ey do not change the -y to -ie for the plural form. Just add -s for the plurals of these nouns.
turkey – turkeys
journey – journeys
monkey – monkeys
holiday – holidays
Sunday – Sundays
Friday – Fridays

Most two-syllable nouns ending in -y change the -y to -ie before adding an -s to become plural. However, plural two syllable nouns ending in -ey or -ay do not change the -y to -ie before adding an -s.
