424. Use Italics to Show Emphasis in Your Writing

We can use italics to emphasize certain words in our writing. Look at this example:
At the party last night, I saw Mary with her boyfriend.
By italicizing the word boyfriend, the writer calls attention to the word. The boyfriend must be important in the context of that piece of writing.

Here are more examples of how you might use italics to emphasize a word or idea:
That storm was the most frightening experience of my life!
Whatever you do, do not open that door!
Mom spoke to her son in a firm voice: “When we are crossing the street, you must remember to hold my hand.”

Remember to use italics when you want to emphasize a word or a group of words.

▶It’s your turn. Which word or words in this sentence might we emphasize with italics? I hope you will never do that again. Did you find one word to italicize? Good for you!
