400. Comma Practice with Compound and Complex Sentences

Section A. A compound sentence is two simple sentences joined with a comma and one of the FANBOYS. Decide if each sentence below is a true compound sentence. If it is a compound sentence, put a comma before the conjunction. If it is not a compound sentence, write NO.
1. I bought a dog but he ran away.
2. The dog was black and brown with a white tail.
3. I bought a dog bed and some food.
4. The dog barks at my cat and the cat runs away.
5. I put the cat outside so my dog would stop barking.
6. My mom likes my cat but my dad likes the dog.

Section B: Each of these sentences is a complex sentence because it begins with a subordinate conjunction. Put a comma at the end of each subordinate clause in the sentence.
7. Because it’s Monday we have to go to school.
8. While I was watching television the power went out.

10. Since I don’t have enough money for lunch I will have to be hungry.
11. After I wash the car I have to mow the lawn.
