When we write a note or a letter or an email, we often begin by using a greeting such as Dear.
We might say Dear Mom, or Dear John, before writing the main part of the message.
We always put a comma after the greeting. It should look like this:
Dear Mom,
Dear John,
We often end our note or letter with the words Love or Yours truly or Sincerely before signing our name.
We call that the closing. Always put a comma after the closing, before signing your name.
A correctly-written closing will look like this:
Love, Mom
Yours truly, Sharon
Sincerely, Sharon Porterfield
When writing a note or letter, use a comma after the greeting. Also put a comma between the closing and your signature.
▶Now you try it. Find the two places in this note where a comma should be inserted.
Dear John I am looking forward to seeing you on Saturday. Love Mary
Did you put a comma after the greeting and in the middle of the closing? Good for you!
