Today America celebrates Independence Day. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read in the city of Boston – and America’s freedom from rule by Great Britain was declared.
Notice how the date is written. First we write the month – July. We leave a space and then write the number of the day of the month – in this case 4. We put a comma after the day of the month and then write the year – 1776. So the correctly-written date looks like this: July 4, 1776.
We use the comma to separate the number 4 and the number 1776. It’s important to insert the comma between the two numbers to eliminate confusion.
Here are some more examples of how to write a date:
June 6, 1944
January 1, 2000
October 13, 2017
Always use a comma (,) in a written date – between the day of the month and the year.
▶It’s your turn. Rewrite this date correctly by inserting a comma: April 14 1917
Did you put the comma after the date, before the year? Good for you!
