363. Capitalizing Words in a Title

The first and last word of a title should always be capitalized. Nouns and pronouns in a title are always capitalized. Verbs – even short ones like Be and Am – should be capitalized in a title. Prepositions – in, into, for, to – are not capitalized unless they are the first or last word of a title. The articles a, an, the are also not capitalized unless they begin the title.

We capitalize the titles of books and plays.
A Wrinkle in Time
To Kill a Mockingbird
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
A Raisin in the Sun

We capitalize titles of poems.
“Ode to the West Wind”
“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”
“Charge of the Light Brigade”

We capitalize the titles of movies and television shows.
The Wizard of Oz
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Leave it to Beaver

Remember that the words in titles need to be capitalized. Capitalize the first and last word of a title and all the other words in the title that aren’t articles or short prepositions.
