304. Highlight on Writing: Consistent Verb Tense

Verb tense tells when the action is happening. With present tense, the action is happening right now. Past tense tells about action that happens before now. Future tense tells about action that happens after now.

When you write, be careful to use the correct verb tense form so that your writing makes sense. If you are writing about something that is happening now, all your verbs should be in present tense. If you are writing about something that happened in the past, all your verbs should be in past tense. If you are writing about something that will happen in the future, be sure to use future tense verbs.
Present: I lift weights every day. Sam helps me with my homework.
Past: I lifted weights yesterday. Sam helped me with my homework.
Future: I will lift weights tomorrow. Sam will help me with my homework.

If you begin a piece of writing with a progressive tense, where the verbs end in -ing, be sure to stay in that progressive tense. It’s important to keep your verb tense consistent so that your writing makes sense.
Mom is making supper. We will be eating in just a few minutes. I will be going to baseball practice after dinner.
