296. Action Verbs Past Tense

A verb in past tense shows something happening before now.
We make an action verb past tense by adding -ed to the end of the word.
Present tense: Today I walk.
Past tense: Yesterday I walked.

Watch how a present tense verb takes -ed to become past tense:
shower – showered Today I shower. Yesterday I showered.
help – helped Today I help. Yesterday I helped.
fix – fixed Today I fix the broken pipe. Yesterday I fixed the broken pipe.
lift – lifted Today I lift the box. Yesterday I lifted the box.
fold – folded Today I fold clothes. Yesterday I folded clothes.

Action verbs ending in the letter -e add only -d to make past tense.
love – loved
hope-hoped
shine – shined

Add -ed to an action verb to show past tense.

  • It’s your turn. Change the present tense action verb in the first sentence to be past tense in the second sentence. Queen Elizabeth rules England today. King George ____ England back in 1776. That wasn’t difficult, was it?
