1. The Simple Sentence

In English, we put our thoughts into groups of words called sentences.

A sentence is a complete idea. A sentence always has a subject and a verb.

Subject – a person or thing doing something

Verb – an action that the subject is doing

The shortest sentences are two words – a subject and a verb.

Dogs bark.

Dogs = subject

bark = verb

We can make a sentence longer by adding describing words. The extra words give more information, but only one thing happens in the sentence.

The two big dogs bark every morning.

When only one thing happens, it is a simple sentence.

  • Now it’s your turn. Think of one thing that is happening. Write it down, and you will have a simple sentence. Wasn’t that simple?
