166. Using the Hyphen With Numbers

A hyphen ( – ) is a short dash used within certain words.

We use a hyphen inside of number words. When we write a number larger than twenty using words, we need a hyphen.
23 = twenty-three
56 = fifty-six
49 = forty-nine
77 = seventy-seven
91 = ninety-one

We also use a hyphen when we write number fractions with words.
1/4 = one-fourth
1/2 = one-half
2/3 = two-thirds
3/4 = three-fourths
7/8 = seven-eighths

A hyphen is a short dash ( – ) used inside of number words and fraction words.

  • It’s your turn. Write each of these numbers in words, using a hyphen where needed. 1/3. 55. That wasn’t so hard, was it?
