When writing, we put a comma between the name of a city and the name of a state.
I visited my aunt in Des Moines, Iowa.
My dad was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
If the city and state are in the middle of a sentence, you need a comma after the state, also.
My brother went to Nashville, Tennessee, for a basketball tournament.
The women’s college softball tournament is held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, every year.
We also use commas between the name of a city and the name of a country.
The Nobel Prize is given out each year at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway.
My cousin spent a summer in Vienna, Austria.
If the city and country are in the middle of a sentence, put a comma after the country, also.
I hope to work in London, England, when I graduate from college.
Sam will move to Paris, France, when his company opens a new office there.
When you include an entire address in your writing, use a comma after the street address and another comma after the apartment or suite number, if there is one. Also put a comma between the city and the state.
Look at these examples:
My new address is 2424 S. Main Street, Apt. 5B, Norman, Oklahoma 73132.
Please direct all inquiries to my associate at this address: 153 Oak Street, Carlisle, MS 35461.
Remember these four comma rules when writing addresses:
Always put a comma between a city and a state and between a city and a country.
If you list a city and a state in the middle of a sentence, put a comma after the state.
If you list a city and a country in the middle of a sentence, put a comma after the country.
When writing an entire address within a sentence, put a comma after the street address, after the apartment number, and between city and state.
