1201. The Preposition and Prepositional Phrase

A preposition is a word that tells the position of a noun. A preposition is always used as part of a phrase. A prepositional phrase begins with the preposition and ends with a noun. The noun is called the object of the preposition.

Preposition: up
Jack went up the hill.
Prepositional phrase: up the hill
Object of the preposition: hill

Here are more sentences using a prepositional phrase:
I dropped my penny into the well.
The ball rolled under the sofa.
Sue is sitting on the floor.
In each of these prepositional phrases, the first word is the preposition, and the last word is the object of the preposition.

A preposition shows the location or position of a noun. A preposition is always the first word in a prepositional phrase. The last word of the phrase is a noun – the object of the preposition.
