1179. Irregular Plural Noun Possessives

A singular noun usually adds ‘s to make it possessive and show ownership.
A plural noun which ends in an s will add only the apostrophe ( ‘) to show ownership.
Irregular plural nouns do not add an s to become plural. They either change their form or stay the same.
Here are some irregular plural nouns:
child – children
woman – women
knife – knives
deer – deer

In the case of these irregular plural nouns, add an ‘s if the word does not already end in s. If the irregular plural ends in s, just add an apostrophe. Here are some examples:
the children’s toys
the women’s coats
the knives’ handles
the deer’s antlers

Add ‘s to plural nouns to make them possessive – unless the plural noun already ends in an s. Plural nouns ending in s need only an apostrophe to make them possessive.

It’s your turn. Change this sentence with the singular possessive noun into a sentence with a plural possessive noun. The woman’s coat is in the closet. The _________ coats are in the closet. Did you figure it out? Good for you!
