1164. Nouns Use Certain Word Endings

You can often recognize a noun by the ending of the word. Here are common noun suffixes:
ness, -tion, -sion, -ment, -ist, -ness, -er, -or
Notice how we can turn a describing word into a naming word:
happy – happiness
sad – sadness
hopeful – hopefulness

We can also turn a verb into a noun:
enjoy – enjoyment
develop – development
improve – improvement
act – actor
teach – teacher
decide – decision
communicate – communication

Learn to recognize nouns by their word endings. Words ending in -ness, -ment, -er, -or, -tion, -sion are usually nouns.
