A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. An article is a word that is used along with a noun. There are three articles in the English language: a, an, the.

The word a is an indefinite article used with nouns that start with a consonant.
a dog, a cat, a house, a car, a book, a mouse, a flower, a lake, a mountain, a road, a country, a banker

The word an is an indefinite article used with nouns that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u)
an elephant, an orchestra, an orange, an object, an ocean, an arena, an electrician, an organization

The word the is a definite article. It is used with any noun when you want to specify that exact noun.
the dog, the cat, the elephant, the house, the car, the object, the organization, the lake, the ocean, the book

Use the articles a, an, the in front of a noun when writing a sentence. I read the book. I caught a fish.
