1128. Punctuation – the Semicolon

A semicolon (;) goes in the middle of a sentence between two complete thoughts. Normally, we use a period to signal that one thought has ended and another is beginning. However, if the two complete thoughts are closely linked, we can use a semicolon between them instead of a period.

Here are some examples of sentences with a semicolon:
I love a rainy day; the house feels so cozy.
Put the dog outside; he’s in my way..
Fall is nearly here; the garden is nearing its end.

Use a semicolon in the middle of a sentence to separate two complete thoughts that are related in some way.

It’s your turn. Where should you put the semicolon in this sentence? It gets dark very early now we need to walk before dinner. Did you figure it out? Good for you!
