1114. Compound Sentences – Using the FANBOYS

A compound sentence is made up of two simple sentences joined together by a comma and a conjunction.
There are seven conjunctions in the English language: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. The first letter of each of those seven conjunctions, put together, spells FANBOYS. Anytime you make a compound sentence, use a comma and one of the FANBOYS to join two simple sentences. Look at these examples:
I feel sad, for the summer is nearly over.
I play volleyball, and my brother plays soccer.
I don’t like fish, nor do I eat shrimp.
It’s raining this morning, but the sun may come out this afternoon.
Dad might mow the lawn today, or he might wait until tomorrow.
Our team lost the game today, yet we still feel we can compete.
Mom made a good dinner, so I will do the dishes.

Use a comma and one of the FANBOYS to make a compound sentence.

It’s your turn. Write a compound sentence using a comma and one of the FANBOYS. That wasn’t difficult, was it?
